Montini downs Driscoll to leave IC in SCC lead By David Oberhelman Daily Herald Sports Writer Posted on October 06, 2002 Rob Frytz had to wait two years to get even. Montini's senior fullback vividly recalls Driscoll linebacker Matt Kervin vaulting over the line to stop Frytz short of a touchdown in Driscoll's 13-7 win on Oct. 7, 2000. Frytz got his vengeance Saturday - on first-and-goal at the Driscoll 3-yard line, Driscoll leading 31-27. Capping a 93-yard fourth-quarter drive that began when Montini's Bob Wierema stripped the ball from Driscoll and Ryan Casey recovered it, the 230-pound Frytz blasted behind left guard Joe Wenholz for the go-ahead score. Three minutes remained in the Suburban Catholic Conference's biggest grudge match, but Driscoll went four-and-out and Montini ran out the clock to win its homecoming 33-31 in Lombard. The loss by the top-ranked, defending Class 4A champs ended Driscoll's 17-game win streak and put Montini and Driscoll into a second-place tie behind unbeaten Immaculate Conception. "It was payback for sophomore year," said Frytz (19 carries, 79 yards). "I was hurt last year, and I pinned one of their state championship newspapers on my wall. I looked at it every day. And I just said, 'I'm going to get that touchdown.'æ" Montini (3-3, 3-1) coach Chris Andriano, whose Broncos beat Driscoll for the first time since 1998, said, "All that was, was just a dive. And we blocked it, and he wasn't going to get stopped." What the Broncos did stop, or at least limit, was Driscoll's (5-1, 3-1) big-play ability in the second half. The first time he ran the ball, Driscoll tailback Greg Turner (11 carries, 78 yards) scored on a 51-yarder. The Highlanders' passing combination of Matt Mahaney (13-of-29, 220 yards) to Billy Morris produced first-half touchdown catches of 77 and 11 yards. Add Rick Albreski's 37-yard field goal, and Driscoll led 24-14 at halftime. Montini was surviving behind quarterback Christian Pfluger (16-of-33, 274 yards). A 23-yard pass to Mike Albian set up Frytz's first score, a 1-yard plunge. In the second quarter, down 17-7, Pfluger hit Albian (10 catches, 170 yards) and Nick Minucciani on long passes that set up Mike Mucha's 8-yard touchdown run. "They did an excellent job protecting (Pfluger)," Driscoll coach and defensive mastermind Tim Racki said. "I tried coming at them early, they picked us up. Then I even went to double-covering and he was still putting the ball in there. That's just great football." A scoreless third quarter seemed to dim the passion from John L. Duffy Memorial Field. It heated up again in the fourth, in spades. First, Montini's Jeff Boiko fell on a high Driscoll punt snap at the Highlander 6-yard line. It set up Pfluger's 1-yard touchdown run to pull the Broncos within 24-21. Montini's Steve Lopez then intercepted a pass that John Fuentes had batted at the line. Minucciani caught a 30-yard touchdown pass for Montini's first lead, 27-24, with 10:01 to play. Driscoll still had a big play up its sleeve. Turner took a pitch right and threw a 67-yard halfback pass to Morris (6 catches, 194 yards) that put the Highlanders back on top, 31-27, with 8:25 left. A minute and 3 turnovers later, Driscoll looked ready to put the game away at the Montini 11-yard line. Instead, Wierema stripped the ball and Casey recovered at the 12. A 5-yard Montini penalty prefaced the Broncos' 93-yard, 11-play, game-winning scoring drive. "All of a sudden I see the ball pop up," Casey said. "So I'm like, 'Whoah, I'd better grab that.' It was the greatest feeling of my life."
